Women who inspire us
Gem Boner
We’re focusing on joy throughout January and want you to meet the very inspiring Gem Boner, founder of luxury holiday retreats, Restaries. After heading up all things content at Soho House, Gem made the leap to leave London with her growing family, following her heart to the Suffolk countryside. There’s never a dull moment on Paradise Farm, as we learned when we chatted to Gem about bringing people together and finding joy in the everyday.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF!
I started in fashion PR which was incredibly varied, but one of my big passions was events. After 15 years, a dream opportunity at Soho House came up as Membership & Communications Director. I spent 7 incredible years there, refining my ability to create memorable guest experiences, which helped me realise my true passion.
How did you come across RIXO and what IS IT THAT resonates with you?
I discovered RIXO through social media and was immediately drawn to the bold, vintage-inspired designs. Fast forward a few years, I had the chance to meet Orlagh and Henrietta and knew they’d be brilliant speakers to share their journey with the Soho House members – they were a huge hit!
What inspired you to take the leap to leave London?
Whilst on maternity leave I realised that now was the time to leave London and focus on doing my own thing. That’s when the idea of opening Restaries came to life – a place where I could merge my passions, embrace a slower pace and build something truly personal.
What’s been the greatest challenge so far?
The sheer scope of responsibility! As a new business owner, you are everything from website programmer to laundry staff. Every day brings new challenges and budgets often end up being much higher than anticipated – since it’s our own money on the line, there’s no big company to fall back on. It’s a constant balancing act, but it's so rewarding.
January often feels LIKE A gloomy TIME– how do you stay inspired?
I actually find something quite exciting about the January reset. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one for dry January or a crazy health kick, but there’s a certain energy in looking ahead to spring and thinking about what you can do better. It’s a time to reflect and find a bit of drive. And honestly, there’s no time for rest with so much to do here!
Are there any rituals you swear by to kick-start the year with positivity?
I swear by getting fresh air. I make a point to get up early, feed the animals, take my coffee and go on a walk or explore while brainstorming, instead of being stuck at my desk. We’ve just opened our new event space, THE TILES, so I’m aiming to start a new routine in there to keep the energy flowing.
What are the small things in life that bring you joy?
The kids! Just one laugh or smile from them makes everything worth it.
How do YOUR OUTFITS influence your mood?
I’ve streamlined my wardrobe lately – it makes life so much easier, especially when things are hectic. Right now, I’m loving my silk shirt by RIXO. I can throw it on with leather trousers and instantly feel like I’ve made an effort, yet still feel comfortable and relaxed. It’s the perfect balance for lifting my spirits.
What does effortless confidence mean to you?
Confidence often comes in layers. You don't always feel it in the moment, but looking back you realise how much you've grown. It's not about big achievements but the small, everyday wins that build up over time. I’ve really had to think like this recently when the doubt starts to creep in.
FINALLY, What’s next for Restaries?
We have so many ideas, it’s hard to be patient! One thing we’re really focused on is collaboration – I love bringing together the right people. We want to partner with chefs, artists, wellness practitioners and anyone who shares our vision. Our location at Paradise Farm feels truly magical and in 2025 we aim to bring even more of that magic to life. Think acoustic woodland sets, forest bathing, land-to-table menus, artist residencies…you name it, it’s all in my head for the future (usually at 3am!).
